Queer Wilderness First Aid

About this trip:

Join Kindling Collective and Backcountry Pulse for three days and one evening of queer and BIPOC centered wilderness medical training! This course is for people who are interested in developing tools to prevent and respond to medical issues in the backcountry. As a certified WFA, you will have the skills to anticipate risks and hazards, identify medical, traumatic, environmental problems, recognize life-threatening issues, initiate basic care and deliver a cohesive report.

This course will take place at Kindling Collective in Portland, Maine and be instructed by Backcountry Pulse and Kindling instructor Hallie and an additional queer Backcountry Pulse instructor. The group will have approximately 16 members. Participants can expect to engage in up to 8 hours per day of lectures and hands-on practice covering patient assessment, trauma, and medical and environmental care. Students will roleplay as both patients and rescuers, and will learn and practice tasks related to patient care, like log rolling a patient, palpating a patient for injuries from head to toe, and conducting informational interviews.

The course concludes with an open-book exam to assess both knowledge and skills, and upon passing, participants will be awarded Wilderness First Aid with Epinephrine Auto-injector Training
